What is Motability?

Motability is a scheme that allows you to exchange your qualifying mobility allowance for a brand-new car, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV,) scooter or powered wheelchair, so you can enjoy more freedom and independence. It offers a ‘worry-free’ package providing an appropriate vehicle, full insurance, breakdown cover, servicing and repairs (including wear and tear.) You will never have any additional costs on top of the monthly deduction from your Mobility allowance which makes budgeting more manageable.

There is a vast array of vehicles to choose from through Motability, allowing for individual needs and budgets. The majority of powered wheelchair and scooter lease agreements are taken out over a three year period without the need for an advance payment. Towards the end of your lease contract you will be provided with a reassessment and a new vehicle. This ensures you have access to the most suitable mobility equipment to meet changing needs.

How are payments organised?

We will work with you from the outset to identify an appropriate powered wheelchair or scooter that is available within your budget. Once you’ve picked your new scooter or powered wheelchair your application is submitted to Motability who work with the DWP to arrange payment at source directly from your Mobility benefit. You are fully supported throughout this process.

Your Motability payment is automatically deducted from your qualifying benefit every 4 weeks. For the majority of our customers your Motability payment will be less than your qualifying benefit. The balance will be paid directly to you in the same way as usual.
